Elon PriceElon Price is currently a physics PhD candidate at Auburn University where she conducts research with the Magnetized Dusty Plasma eXperiment (MDPX) device, analyzing the spatio-temporal characteristics of filamentary structures in magnetized low-temperature plasma. She received her master’s of science in physics as part of the Fisk-Vanderbilt Master’s-to-PhD Bridge program in 2021. Her masters thesis was developed from her research modeling black hole accretion plasma for next generation observations with the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) at the Harvard University Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) as one of the inaugural interns for the NSBP/SAO EHT Scholars Program. Price received her bachelor’s in physics with a minor in mathematics from North Carolina State University in 2019. In her free time she tutors black youth in math, physics, and violin. She also enjoys jam sessions with violin and electric bass, exploring vegan and gluten-free cooking and PC gaming. She has served on the NSBP student council since 2018 and co-founded the first NSBP student chapter at NC State University. Price served as the 2022-2024 student representative to the executive board. Carlton SmithCarlton Smith is a first-year graduate student at Yale University pursuing a Ph.D. in Physics as a part of the Integrated Physics, Engineering, and Biology Program and as a Wu Tsai Graduate Fellow. Carlton recently graduated from the University of Florida, earning a B.S. in Physics and B.A. in Mathematics. Their research interests include computational neuroscience specifically and biophysics broadly. In their free time, Carlton can be seen playing his guitar or bass, learning Portuguese, reading, or going on long walks. Allen Pierre-LouisAllen Pierre-Louis is an NSF GRFP fellow and Alfred P Sloan Fellow, pursuing his PhD in physics at Duke University. Allen worked as a Brookhaven National Laboratory staff researcher for the Center for Frontiers in Nuclear Science as a GEM fellow. He received his BS and MA from Stony Brook University where he worked on feasibility studies for the Electron Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory and built a cosmic ray tracker to help detector development for the MOLLER experiment at Jefferson Laboratory. Allen’s current research involves the ATLAS experiment at CERN. He is the past president of the Stony Brook chapter of NSBP and current vice student representative for NSBP at the national level. Allen is interested in solving economic inequality, reading about econophysics, and in his free time he enjoys art, cooking, and exercise. He currently serves as the Vice Student representative on the NSBP Student Council. Tracy EdwardsTracy Edwards is a Ph.D. Student at Michigan State University, earning her doctorate in nuclear physics. Her research is focused on the perturbed angular correlation (PAC) of radioactive metals to characterize chemical processes using gamma spectroscopy. Her research at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) contributes to the DOE’s defense nuclear nonproliferation research and development efforts. Outside of her academic work, she is the Student Representative and Safety Committee chair for the National Society of Black Physicists (NSBP). Tracy has served on the NSBP Student Council for four years as a student member and as the past Vice Student Representative. She is an active member of the American Physical Society (APS) Physicist Coalition for Nuclear Threat Reduction. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Tracy co-created the NSBP x Harlem Gallery of Science mentoring program in Harlem, New York, to engage youth to pursue higher education and career pathways in Science. However, her most proud accomplishment is successfully mentoring women of color through the graduate school application process. Tracy holds an M.S. in Physics from Michigan State University and a B.S. in Physics from Hampton University. Emmanuel AnekeEmmanuel Aneke is a 2nd year PhD candidate in the Applied Physics program at Northwestern University. In May 2020, he graduated from Georgia Tech with a BS in Applied Physics. Afterward, he worked at both the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and Argonne Wakefield Accelerator before starting his program. His focus is experimental particle accelerator physics, specifically in application to x-ray light sources. Unprofessionally, he is an avid rock climber and trains in Muay Thai. Outside of the gym, he likes to play the cello and cook. Winston HarrisWinston Harris, is a fourth-year graduate student at the University of Memphis. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Mechanical Engineering alongside pursuing master's degrees in Computational Physics and Mechanical Engineering. His undergraduate education took place at Middle Tennessee State University, where he completed bachelor’s degrees in Applied Physics, Aerospace Technology, Mechatronics Engineering, and Mathematics. Winston is passionate about acquiring and sharing knowledge. He also works full-time as an engineer. During his spare time, he enjoys amateur astronomy, traveling, indulging in tabletop games, watching movies, listening to music, and playing the piano. Gianni SimsGianni Sims is a fourth-year PhD candidate at Florida Atlantic University. Her research mainly focuses on understanding the seeding mechanisms of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) by studying the active galactic nuclei (AGN) occupation fraction in galaxies as a function of galaxy mass using data from the Deep-Drilling Fields Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDFS) Survey, XMM-Newton Survey (XMM-LSS), and Elais-S1 (ES1) Survey. This work aims to distinguish between different SMBH seeding mechanisms by quantifying their distribution in this extensive extragalactic survey. She is originally from Bronx, New York, and obtained her bachelor's degree at Penn State University. Gianni likes to read comic books and write poetry in her spare time. Christopher ThompsonCristopher Thompson is from Macon, Georgia. He obtained his undergraduate degree from Bates College. Currently in his fifth year, Cristopher is a PhD candidate in the physics program at the Ohio State University. His focus within physics revolves around biophysics, where he conducts research. His primary area of interest involves the study of intracellular organelles, employing diverse microscopy techniques for his investigations. |
