Dear Fellow NSBP Member:
In the past, the function of the Awards and Fellowship Committee (AFC) was to review and recommend candidates for the various awards and prizes in the field of physics. The AFC was/is also be responsible for evaluating and making recommendations to the NSBP Board of Directors to elevate NSBP members to the status of Fellow of the National Society of Black Physicists. We would like to mark the 40th anniversary as a year of renewal for the organization. Our strategy is to re-commission the AFC and work to re-brand the NSBP as a serious organization of highly distinguished scientists who are active participants in today’s scientific discourse. We believe that an important step to successfully rebranding NSBP is to increase the visibility of our members, many of whom have distinguished themselves in their careers.
Given all the amazing science going on today, NSBP intends to showcase the achievements of our member and work to get them recognized by the rest of the physics community. Our objective is to find ways to give recognition across the full spectrum of our membership, from the youngest, with the freshly minted degrees, to the seasoned scholars who have a raft of publications and citations in tow. A number of organizations (including the APS) offer Graduate Student and Early Career awards and/or fellowships.
However, before NSBP can bask in the glory reflected from our members, we must first identify which members have a high probability of beating out the competition to win an award if they were nominated. Therefore, AFC is calling for the community to help us make this happen by asking you to submit the name of potential nominees. Please review the awards described at the links below. If you know someone who would be a good candidate, please send us his/her name so that we can contact them. If you feel that you would be a good candidate for an award or prize, please prepare a package summarizing your accomplishments for us to review. AFC will be happy to nominate candidates with strong packages. We will also give feedback on what could be done to enhance the package. Because there are many awards and prizes out there, we cannot keep track of them all. Therefore if you are aware of an award or prize opportunity (not listed below) that you believe one of our members can qualify for, please bring it to our attention.
- The name of a nominee, their contact information, and the prize/award you would nominate them for;
- If you want your name submitted, please send your resume and the name of the prize you think you might quality for;
